About Us

Slaugham Parish consists of four villages, Slaugham, Handcross, Pease Pottage and Warninglid. After the last set of boundary changes by the Boundary Commission, the Parish was split into two wards. Handcross & Pease Pottage in the Balcombe ward and Slaugham and Warninglid into the Bolney ward. This means that the Parish now has the distinction of having two District Councillors. The Parish lies alongside the A23 London to Brighton Road and is one of the larger parishes within the Mid Sussex District Council area. Each of the four villages have their own distinct character. (see our section on "The Villages" [LINK] The Parish Council is the third tier of local government and is not to be confused with a Parochial Church Council which has no local authority powers. The Parish is represented by thirteen councillors, ten for the Handcross and Pease Pottage ward and three for the Slaugham and Warninglid Ward. The Parish covers large areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and has many interesting places to visit within the Parish and nearby. See our section on Leisure and Tourism.

About the Council

Slaugham Parish Council is one of the smaller local authorities (usually known as Parish Councils). There are thirteen councillors, ten for the Handcross & Pease Pottage Ward and three for the Slaugham and Warninglid Ward. They are elected for four years. The next elections will be in 2011.

The Council raises a 'precept' on council tax payers to cover the running expenses. For the year 2009/10 the precept was 45,000.00 pounds.

The Parish Council has more powers to do things for the benefit of the Parish than is generally realised. These powers are shown in the section 'Powers of Local Authorities'.

The Council provides additional street cleaning facilities in all four villages by the provision of litter pickers.

There are two allotment sites, the one in Handcross is owned by the Council and the other in Warninglid is leased from the District Council.

In addition it owns land at the rear of West Park Road, Handcross and the rear of All Saints Church, Handcross. It is also the owner of the recreation ground in Handcross (which has two excellent football pitches) and the Pavilion there.

The Council has two playgrounds, one at the Handcross Recreation ground providing play provision for toddlers and older children plus a half basketball court. There is also a Petanque Piste (Boules or French Bowls). The second playground is in the village of Slaugham.

The Council is also responsible for the Common Land in Slaugham and village greens in Pease Pottage and Slaugham.

In addition to these facilities the Council also provides and maintains most of the street ligthing in the Parish and makes provision for litter bins, public seats, notice boards and Bus shelters.

The Council works closely with the Police and Neighbourhood watch to provide information to the residents and to take up any relevant problems with the police authorities.

The Parish Council has power to make comments on all planning applications within the four villages but the Mid Sussex District Council makes amy final decision, taking into account the views of this Council.

We liaise with the West Sussex County Council regarding various traffic problems in and around the villages. Currently, we are working with Warninglid Primary School under the 'Safe Routes to Schools' campaign with the aim of reducing traffic speed by the school and providing a new footpath from the cross roads to the existing footpath by the school in order to provide a safe route to encourage more children to walk to school.
